Workshop: Qualitative Research Methods in IB
Qualitative data analysis in the AI era: Key considerations for IB researchers
Hosts:
Lecturer Duc Nguyen, Alliance Manchester Business School, UK
Professor Eriikka Paavilainen-Mäntymäki, University of Turku, Finland
Professor Emmanuella Plakoyiannaki, University of Vienna, Austria
Professor Catherine Welch, Trinity College, Ireland
Description and objectives:
The interactive post-conference workshop addresses the relationship between human and artificial intelligence (AI) in qualitative data analysis. Traditionally, in qualitative IB research we have taken the role of the researcher as the primus motor in research somewhat for granted. This neglects the role that technology has played in our research – something that now has become an urgent question. To address this, the workshop will be divided into two parts. In the first part, we will undertake a critical examination of how Generative AI performs as an analytical tool. In the process, we will address some of the popular, and highly misleading, myths about the nature of this technology. In the second part, we will discuss the values and core assumptions associated with qualitative IB research, and present potential ways in which these values and core qualities could be strengthened in our data analysis. Specifically, we discuss how IB researchers can capitalize on, and report more explicitly, the human skills, ideation and analytical sense-making that are the essence of qualitative data analysis, making it meaningful and impactful.
