Focus: Critical, Discourse, and Ethnographic Research

Workshop Description

This workshop aims to engage researchers in an interactive dialogue about evolving methodologies that transcend the limitations of traditional research approaches. The focus is on critical, discourse, and ethnographic research methods that make the invisible visible by uncovering overlooked aspects of social phenomena. By exploring the fluidity of the inferencing process and practising researcher reflexivity, the workshop encourages engagement with participatory multi-actor research spaces. It addresses the complexities of cross-sector collaborations and the dynamic interplay between structure and fluidity in research methodologies.

Key Topics

Transforming and reimagining the research process:

    • Developing fluid, flexible, and adaptive research designs.
    • Understanding the dynamics and complexities of multi-actor collaborations.
    • Identifying what counts as valid knowledge when involving diverse actors.
    • Exploring participatory approaches to conventional data collection.

Finding the right balance in inferencing:

    • Balancing dynamic, context-sensitive inferencing with standardisation.
    • Redefining methodological rigour and adaptive research processes.
    • Revisiting validity, reliability, and relevance in research outcomes.

Enacting critical self-reflection:

    • Reporting positionality
    • Navigating openness and vulnerability in research.
    • Engaging with marginalised groups.

Collaborative, Participatory, and Open Research:

    • Exploring methodologies for involving diverse actors in collaborative research.
    • Unpacking the challenges of studying hidden populations and representing them in research outputs.
    • Embracing fluid methodologies and combining various genres to uncover unseen aspects of social phenomena.
